Photo Sightings
Synster has a couple photos of a very cute kid listening to to some tune.
Joe Cunningham's midwestern milkweed photo reminds me of home spent in and around farmland.
Chromogenic has a couple of good photos, the first of someones feet brings spring to mind, and the happy antenna ball punctuates the carefree feeling of spring.
Meccapixel has london underground photos with that cyan saturated lomolog color that identifyies the urban culture so well.
Infrangible has some of the best people pictures, and he captures them so consistently. I'd like to know his post production process and how he captures many of his low lighting compositions with such clarity and sharpness.
Sara over at Jocund has been putting up some fantastic studio poses of late.
Food4Eyes is perhaps the most consistenly pleasing photoblogger I know. His latest is a studio shot of a daisy. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for flower shots. They are absurdly easy to capture, and in the spring everyone is overflowing with them, but I don't ever get tired of it.
Deceptive media has been putting up some wonderfully ethereal prints. This one of a stair case and this one of Brookwood Cemetary inspire me. Also, this train station capture is nicely appealing.
Chromasia's effusion of red is soothing to me. I don't know what it is, but I love the effect red has on a photo.
An Open Request to Photobloggers
I love you guys. But I'd like to see some consistency in the permalink implimentations. I sometimes spend way to much time looking for a way to find the archived link so I can put you in my list each day. The most frustrating one is when I have to hit the previous link then the next link to get to the right photo. And when you link the photo to the previous photo, that is also confusing.
Just to review here are the various implementations I've found while perusing.
Linking the photo date. I like this implementation because it is has a long history and follows the convention used predominantly on normal blogs.
A permalink text near the photo. This one is also very good, as it' hard to miss and also often used on normal blogs.
Linking the actual photo to its archive. This ones is trickier. I know the photoblogger is probably trying to limit the amount of text cluttering up the screen, but its not always intuitive where the link is and I went months before I noticed its use on many blogs.
Linking the actual photo to the previous entry. This isn't technically a permalink practice, but I put it in here because there is no way to distinguish between this one and the practice above. This method is particularly confusing. If you use it, you should make it plain what the functionality is. I know it make for easy perusing of the archive, but I would bet most of your users would prefer an obvious permalink.
Using a set of the last five photos on the page as the archive links for the current photo. This one works but requires I spend a bit of time searching. The practice isn't common, although its gaining some popularity. I'd still prefer an obvious permalink text.
Not having a permalink on the page at all, but including a previous link. I have to go to the previous then the next to get the right url. I'll many times go the extra mile to get a permalink, but sometimes I'll simply skip it because its too much work. Web users are a lazy lot, don't make it hard on us.
No permalink, no nothing. 9 times out of 10 will cause me to simply not link your photo. I'll see comments but no permalink. Irritating.
Just in closing, I want every one to know I love your photos. I get precious little time to spend on my own photography and I know how much effort goes into maintaining a photoblog. You guys are an inspiration. Keep it up.

Photos Not Sharp? Wondering Why?
Published On: June 4, 2004 15:27,
filed in Photography
I have a problem with blurry photos, and I've been searching around the net doing research on why. Having spent a good four to six months evaluating different reasons and doing a bit of experimentation, I'd like to share a bit of what I learned.
Sharpness is one of the big key points most photographers look at when evaluating quality. If you shoot digital, as I do, there are a number of different reasons why you could be having issues with blurry or soft images. Those issues fall into three basic categories, User Error, Equipment Quality, and Rounding Errors in Digital Processing.
User Error
The most common problem is user error. Motion blur is hard to eradicate, especially when most people are shooting in less than optimal conditions the majority of the time. You can help this problem by buying fast lenses (i.e. lenses with wide maximum aperatures) and lenses with Image Stabalization. You can also use a tripod, and if sharpness is an extremely important factor, use a timer (to prevent your hand from causing camera shake when you press the button) and mirror lockup (to prevent shake from the mirror when it slaps up to allow the photo to be taken).
Equipment Quality and Limitations
The second most common issue is equipment quality, which often plays into the hands of user error. Lens manufacture varies from lens to lens and from brand to brand. You should make the mistake of thinking that since Canon glass is usually better than Sigma, that all Canon lenses will outperfom all Sigma lenses. To give an example, the Sigma F/1.8 20mm prime is equal to if not better than the Canon F/2.8 20mm prime. Before buying a lens, try to find a review that details how a lens performs at each f/stop and if its a zoom, at various focal lengths.
You see, most lenses perform poorly when wide open, i.e. stopped completely down. Also, most zoom lenses suffer some degradation in sharpness and rarely compete well with a prime (i.e. a fixed focal length lens). In fact, the longer the focal range on a zoom lens, the more likely the upper end of the range will be soft. Its difficult to maintain a sharp focus throughout the zoom range, so usually one end of the range will suffer, and if the lens is cheap or poorly constructed, both ends will suffer. Most lenses perfom best when the aperature is in the middle, and if its a zoom, the focal lenth is somewhere in the middle also.
In general, the faster a lens is the sharper it will be, because you will have more light to shoot with and will have less motion blur. Also, with faster lenses, you can afford to stop up the aperature and shoot comfortably, thus coming closer to the sweet spot (the sharpest point in your lenses configuration).
Rounding Errors and Digital Image Processing
Lastly, if you are shooting digital, you have one more issue to deal with, and that is the effect rounding errors have on digital image processing. Digital photographs convey sharpness by what they call acutance, which is the level of contrast between two pixels. The more contrast between two pixels the sharper it will appear. The problem with digital is that when the image gets tranlated from analog to bits, light values are rounded off causing a subtle softening of contrast between the individual pixels. All digital images should be sharpened in post production. In fact, most cameras apply sharpening to images right after they are taken, but often the amount of sharpening isn't enough. If you shoot RAW, then no sharpening is applied in camera and you must do so in post production.
My problem is I have a Sigma 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6 zoom lens. Its a nice lens for hobby type work, but produces soft images from about 200-300, regardless of how still my camera is and how much light I have. Because its relatively slow, I am often forced to shoot with the lens wide open, making my shots even worse.
What's my solution? Well, my Sigma 28-300 cost me about $300 dollars. I'm going to eventually replace it with three lenses. A Sigma 20mm f/1.8 prime, a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom, and a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS zoom. That will cost me roughly $3000.00. *grin* hoy... I should have picked up a cheaper hobby...

Elisabeth is the daughter of a couple in my church. A couple of weeks ago she was happily hamming it up after the services were over. This shot is particularly interesting because of the lighting, which is artificial. It looks like light is coming in from a window, in the early morning. I shot the photo with auto white balance, and the flash was bounced off a white wall some 20 feet away.

An Analysis of Photographic Style in Two Parts
Published On: August 2, 2004 14:13
In response to a photograph by Chromasia, I wrote a couple of comments that turned into something of a mini essay on photographic style and how it relates to us as a medium. The comments were worthy of posting here, so I thought I would share them with you.
Part One posted in response to
MotherPhotographers have at their disposal a couple of basic tools. The use of perspective to alter the normal perception of a scene or object, and the arrangement and tonal depth of light.
Without going through all your photos to survery them, just from what I remember seeing on your posts the last several months, it feels like you specifically shoot with an emphasis on either perspective or light.
This one’s color and tonal depth are striking. My favorite
compositions fall into the light painting category, for example:
A lot of these are monochromatic, which I find telling. The few that are of color tend to have a limited color palette. The simple reason for this, I think, is because fewer colors allow us to focus on the tonal range, the photo graph, if you will. It also simplifies the subject, isolating a specific feeling or notion.
It is the isolation that I think endears this approach to me most. The revealing of something basic, something you can savor without the distractions of a complicated circumstance.
I would have passed by this one as unremarkable at first glance. Its nice enough, but seems to fall into that category of things done before. There are a lot of photos with the same austere lines that seem to all look the same. It isn't a bad shot, but it lacks punch. No emotional trigger for me.
Part Two posted in response to
Climb Every MountainIn your previous image, I commented that the photo's I liked best were ones that fell into the "light painting" category. I posted several examples. I grew tired of architectural photography early on in my personal experience because it seemed very little was said in the images beyond the, "oh neat!" factor. I found myself looking for imagery that in some way told a story. Most of my architectural shots were part of a survey of important cultural places in Saint Louis, all shot in 2002. A series is usually more appealing than a single shot, because you can say more about something that way. You can show the similarity in buildings and modes of construction, or show the contrast between neighborhoods and parts of town.
I find portraits appealing because they usually carry a more emotionally charged trigger. Your Mother Daughter shot can be derived symbolic of anyone’s Mom and their relationship with her child. The woman in the cafe is a cliché; a romanticized scene played out in movies and stories the world over. The photos of the little girl lift up the idea of youth, and the innocence it typically brings with it.
Light Painting type scenes usually have a strong emotional trigger geared toward the romantic. The overly saturated/hyper realistic photos can also have strong emotional triggers, but they are geared more towards nostalgia or darker more austere moments in time. The photo of the
Old Automobile is typical of that kind of image. It was reminiscent of an older more aged time, but tinged with a bit of regret. Things were more dignified then,it would seem from the image.
Architecture is hard to speak with. The themes tend to be minimalist and esoteric in nature. They are less connected with the everyday realities we deal with, and thus don't usually have the same emotional triggers into our lives.

This photo inagurates a new and much simplified design for walljm.com. The old website will remain as it was, but photos will be displayed larger with less around to distract you.
This photo begins a new series of Night Scenes, photos taken in the dark. The series will explore some of themes and motifs associated with night life in a modern city.
This particular photo was taken in the parking lot of Missouri Baptist Hospital, at the junction of I-270 and I-64. Shot with an aperature of f/22 for 30 seconds at ISO 100. The image has been adjusted for a WB of 2000K, and cropped. The person in the photo is me. No other photoshopping has been done to the image.
This specific image is the best of a set of three. The translucence of the figure adds an ethereal quality to an allready spiritual scene. The empty parkinglot seems to add to a feeling of loneliness.
What do you think?

Morungatun is an IDP camp located about 30 kilometers North-West of Soroti. On our first Sunday (5/22), we drove out to the camp and Pastor preached. Conditions there were poor, but better off than in some places. Dr. Guimon had recently been able to supply them with seeds and potato cutting so they could plant. Because of Joseph Kony, many Ugandan's were unable to plant this year, and many lost not just their homes, but also their crops and seeds. They had been praying for rain, and God had blessed. Because most of Uganda survives of subsitence farming, the importance of rain shouldn't be understated.

A camera is wonderful thing, especially one that can show you your photo right after you take it. Ugandan's have cameras, so taking photo's isn't anything new to them, but I discovered the children get a big kick out of seeing their photo so fast. I would take someone's photo and show it to them and they would get really excited. Within moments, I would be surrounded by as many as twenty to thirty children, all crowding in to have the photo taken. :) This little guy managed to get his taken all by himself. I apologize for the delay in posting. I was in Chicago at a conference when the last photo posted and wasn't able to get to a net connection.
This photo is of an alley in Soroti Town. The walls and general state of things is common throughout the country. The reddish brown color of the walls is from the dust that blows everywhere, especially in the dry season. This building could be brand new or 150 years old. Both would look the same. By the time a building is constructed it is covered with that dust.

On the way to the game park we stopped at a gas station to buy drink, use the pit latrine, and stretch our legs. The light post caught my attention. What fascinates me about much of the scenery in Uganda (and this is probably true of most third world countries) is the age and wear of everything considered technological. This isn't meant as a criticism, but it does stand out in stark relief to me, because I live in a country where few things are that old. It is a different mentality, and the part of me that constantly yearns for something simpler in my life finds the mentality that saves and uses everything appealing. Nothing like having less to put into focus what really has value.

My deepest apologies for letting the posts fall off the page. For the next indeterminable period of time I will be posting Black and White photographs of Saint Louis City. My goal is to capture, over the course of two or three years, the feel and nature of the city.
I will also be posting the address for each photograph as closely as possible. My hope is to be able to eventually map the photographs spatially using maps.google.com. Oh, and due to an error in judgement and scripting, the first 20 or so photos do not have EXIF data to publish. I am going to try and find some older versions to restore some of that, but no promises.

Update: People have asked how I got the sky so dark. I did two things, the first was to increase the saturation of the original image using the Levels filter in photoshop. I also decreased the blue channel in the channel mixer when I converted the image to B&W. This allowed me to achieve the same kind of effects I might have achieved if I had shot with B&W film and used a blue filter.

From a Comment on Chromasia:
Published On: November 11, 2005 10:32,
filed in Photography
Chromasia posted a
pleasure doing business / 10 November, 2005 and John from Shots Photography started a discussion. I'm not sure what the heart of the discussion was about, but I posted some thought about photography and the medium that I felt were interesting enough to repost here.
I'm terribly confused about what the debate going here actually is. Anyone care to sum it up?
While I'm waiting for that I'll throw my random two cents in, because heck, I'm always up to talking about the medium.
Personally, I think the photoblog has limitations as a medium. I'm not putting the photoblog down, man, I love my photoblog. But the way you display images and the context you put them in is as much a part of the editorial process as photoshopping the image to turn the raw data into the picture you wanted.
Sometimes I get frustrated a little with the linear nature of the photoblog format. I used to post whole galleries at one time and put up a notification. When you do that, it makes more sense to view images not as distict wholes, but as parts of a bigger picture or idea.
I've pondered on starting a photography/literary magazine just so I would have a place to publish a different kind of photoset. Maybe I will someday, when I have time. ;-)

I'll also chime in with John on the issue of how it becomes difficult to try new things when you become accomplished. I think part of the reason for that is because there are less new things to try. I don't want to continue doing things that I know don't work, and so tend to avoid a lot of techniques with serious flaws. The challenge as a photographer, as you learn the craft and what goes on and a more fundamental level, is to take that increased understanding and use it to create something new and perhaps better.
I can see the benefit of forcing yourself to engage in something random occasionally, just to startle yourself out of the norm. But I think you will be better off in focusing your experiments. Createa scenario or a challenge and try to solve the problem. Set up controlled experiments like, how many ways can I present the same subject? or how many different way can I light the same scene without changing the angle or lens on my camera. I think those are better ways of breaking out of the mold than simply doing things at random.
************************************************
Well, that was a long rambling response. Dave, I like both todays and yesterday's images. My reasons are simple. The subjects in both were caught in moments of genuine emotion. Regardless of how the model's may have actually felt, their expressions are true. I find that little window into the heart of humanity interesting.

Truth be told, Angels in scripture are terrible beings. Though they have no sex as we understand it, they are masculine in nature and in all recorded accounts, terrible enough to scare even battle hardened soldiers and commanders of war.
The cherubim have among their ranks Gabriel, and Lucifer, and probably Michael. Having said all that, I like the sensibility and emotion conveyed by the modern interpretation of the Cherub. A kind of soft and childlike comfort, not meant for war but peace.

If I had more time I would compose a poem to compliment this image. Alas, I am too busy. I like the way the trees frame her figure, and the way the stature leans slightly forward. I think it may need cropping a little, to center the image, but I'm not sure.

This one was more weathered than most, and the figure has a distinctly medieval look about the face and hair.

This angel reminds me of what I would expect to appear before the empty tomb of Christ, proclaiming, "He is not here, He is risen as He said!".

I am terribly sorry about the break in photos. Hopefullly, I shall be able to get back to normal posting very soon. I do have a couple photos for you though, taken a couple months ago at the Saint Louis Scottish Games held in Forest Park. There was a bird exhibit with an Owl, a Golden Eagle, a Peregine Flacon and a Hawk. This is the Falcon I think, though if you know better, I'll stand corrected, it could be the hawk.

I like this version better. The monochrome adds impact, mostly because of the deeper shadows I think.

Angeline, Fair Angeline, where hast thou been?
Thy love is waiting for thee here.
How long will you run, what troubles befall thee
That you must flee in fear?

Few things are as beautiful or made to suit cold and grey weather like the runes and designs of the Celts. Always did love the particular asthetic of the Celtic Cross and the Endless Knot.

Landscapes like this make me depressed. A part of me loves the very drabness of it, and a part of me desperately wishes it was more saturated, or somehow more lovely. This image bespeaks of conflict and the natural resolution of the changing seasons. At least, it does to me...

My grandmother on my mom's side comes from the Read family line, and like her father and many generations before her, she loves to tell stories.
She also loves to read, and spend much of her time these days reading books and reading her Bible. Weaker now than she used to be physically, she stands a giant of her generation in faith. Women of her stature are rare, and I am thankful for her influence on my family.
With all my love,

A special treat. This is my Grandmother and Grandfather some 50 years ago. I don't have the exact dates, perhaps my Mom can provide them. It would have been close to, or just after WW2.
This is a photo of a photo I took so I would have a reference copy.
