He Had My Brothers Jaw

Published On: September 7, 2006  14:18
On the subway yesterday, I had to switch trains at Grand. While I was standing on the platform, I looked over and saw this guy who reminded me of Andrew. He had the same jaw and nose. I remember he had a red checkered shirt on, and got off at Union Station.

The Asian Family

Published On: September 8, 2006  14:21
From a trip I took several months ago...

There was this asian family sitting across from me at the airport terminal. The mother was reading the paper in chinese, or looking out the window, lips pulled back in a dissapproving frown so comfortable for her that it is probably habitual. The father was sitting to her right, looking intent and uncomfortable, and the twentysomething daughter to her left was slouched in the seat reading a Dan Brown novel, fine black hair dyed red and cut just a bit longer than her chin. I remember she was twisting her hair with her fingers and bouncing her foot.

Southern Gentleman and Twentysomethings

Published On: September 9, 2006  14:23
From a trip I took a few months ago...

I remember a southern gentleman, standing in line with his khaki pants, yellow plaid shirt, and oldish blue blazer and straw hat.

There were two college age girls in the terminal also, trendy, looking almost feline. The one was sitting, the other standing, caught in mid stretch. She looked indolent, sensual and slinky, wearing an "I love guess" t-shirt that was so thin you can see through it to the sports bra she's wearing underneath.

Petulant Boy and His Mother

Published On: September 10, 2006  14:25
From a trip I took a few months ago...

There was petulant young boy with his mother, who had to be told not to get in the way of the attendant taking care of ticketing. He was whiney and hovered close to his mother when scolded.

Thirtysomething Couple

Published On: September 11, 2006  14:26
From a trip I took a few months ago...

There was a thirtysomething couple who were slightly drunk, flirting with each other and overly chatty. The woman was talking to me and laughing and leaning in close to look at my ticket.

Thoughts on Walker Percy and the Thanatos Syndrome

Published On: September 13, 2006  14:30
Percy writes in a pace that I can only describe as even. The story doesn't have rhythm like the sea has rhythm, the pace moving slower the faster, instead there is only a steady unfolding, a constant dialog with no pauses or breaks.

Percy wrote, in the Thanatos Syndome, that Tom said, "small disconnected facts, if you take note of them, have a way of becoming connected." I remember thinking that this is true, but often the connections are worthless or unsubstantiated. You should be careful about drawing connections between things with little to go on.

The Thanatos Syndrome is written in the present tense. Even when Percy is retelling something that occured earlier, he tells it in the present tense as his character remembers it. This ties to my previous observation about the way Percy doesn't waver his pace.

Lanky

I saw a man on the train platform yesterday at Forest Park Station. He was wearing a white t-shirt, and I remember noticing him because his neck jutted out from his shoulders. He was tall and had red hair and a beard.

Black Woman in a Light Blue Dress

Published On: September 20, 2006  15:35
She was probably 5’4" and was over weight, but what drew your attention was the blue dress. It was the kind you expected to see in a ballet, somewhat gauzey. It had straps, and came down to her knees. She was dark, and the light almost sky blue color of the dress contrasted with her skin. I remember she had some sort of chaulky substance on her cheeks, and it reminded me of natives from africa or south america.

Roads and driving in Uganda is decently safe, but there is a bit of danger. We passed this overturned truck on our way to Soroti.

Love Suffers Love, and Endless Hoping

Published On: September 29, 2006  13:43, filed in Verse
day suffers day, and emptiness
a pervasive feeling in the back of the soul
and frustration, crying out, but not completely,
to proud to let go of ruined things familiar

self suffers self, and resignation
a comfortable pain that is perversely loved
defying logic to pour energy into an object long dead
to vain to give up hopes of a selfish triumph

love suffers love, and endless hoping
a faithful prompting in the depths of the heart
telling you to let go of sins long held private
to kind to cease from calling you home
